The Prego Boyz

2019 – 2025 | 7,000+ Meals Served

If you want to learn how to run a business, there is no classroom quite like a kitchen.

Before SuperbSite and before my degrees at Wits, there was The Prego Boyz. Founded in 2019 by myself and my business partner, Gianluca Caldeira, this venture was born out of a simple passion for exceptional food and a shared entrepreneurial itch. We were just two Grade 9 students with a vision, navigating the world of high school textbooks by day and perfecting recipes by night.

From farmers’ markets to high-energy festivals, we grew The Prego Boyz into a beloved local brand, serving over 7,000 meals by the time we hung up our aprons at our final event in December 2025.

A Trial By Fire

Cutting your teeth in the food business is a true trial by fire. When the line is out the door, the grill is hot, and orders are piling up, you learn very quickly what you are made of. This environment instilled in me a profound sense of urgency that I have carried into every venture since. You learn to solve problems in seconds, not hours. You learn that “good enough” is the enemy of “great.”

Most importantly, we developed an obsession with constantly exceeding expectations. Whether it was the quality of our ingredients or the warmth of our service, we realized early on that the only way to compete was to be undeniably better than the rest.

The Origin Story

Our story was unique because it was entirely student-owned and operated. While our peers were focusing solely on exams, we were balancing supply chains, event logistics, and customer service.

We crafted our prego rolls with a meticulous attention to detail, believing that every bite needed to be a burst of flavor. We weren’t just selling food; we were selling an experience. This commitment to quality became the cornerstone of our brand. We explored new flavors, pushed boundaries, and refused to settle for the ordinary.

The Legacy

Balancing the demands of a growing business with the rigors of a Finance and Risk Management degree was no small feat. It required discipline, sacrifice, and a lot of late nights. But looking back, I wouldn’t trade those chaotic, high-pressure years for anything.

The Prego Boyz taught me the fundamentals of commerce in the most practical way possible. It taught me how to manage cash flow, how to market a product, and how to build loyalty.

Although we served our last official meal in December 2025, the spirit of The Prego Boyz lives on. The lessons learned in that trailer (the urgency, the grit, and the pursuit of excellence) are the same principles I now apply to building websites and analyzing financial risk.

To everyone who supported us, bought a roll, or simply cheered us on: thank you for being part of our flavorful journey.
