FINANCIAL SERVICES ENTHUSIAST

The Mechanics of Risk & Reward

I recently completed my Bachelor of Commerce in Insurance & Risk Management and Corporate Finance at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), a journey that fundamentally changed how I view the business world.

While my background in web development taught me how to build assets, my studies in Insurance have taught me how to protect them. I am fascinated by the complex architecture of the insurance industry, not just as a safety net, but as a critical enabler of innovation.

Beyond the lecture halls, I have actively sought out opportunities to bridge the gap between theory and the real world. Participating in university industry challenges has been a highlight of my undergrad years, pushing me to solve complex, real-time problems alongside some of the brightest peers in the faculty. These experiences confirmed what I already knew: my long-term future lies in the dynamic world of insurance and risk.

2025 Spencer-RIMS Student Risk Management Challenge

It was with great pride that I served as the team leader of team Risk Takers, which represented the University of the Witwatersrand at the 2025 RIMS Student Risk Management Challenge. This prestigious global competition  brought together 61 universities from 19 countries.

After rigorous evaluation, our team secured a place among the Top 8 finalists, an achievement that reflects our dedication and analytical rigor. The final phase of the competition took place in Chicago, USA, in May 2025, where we presented our research and recommendations before a panel of industry experts.

"You did an amazing job presenting. If you represent the future of our industry… that future is bright."

African Insurance Exchange 2025

One of the undisputed highlights of 2025 was the invitation for my team, “The Risk Takers,” to present at the African Insurance Exchange (AIE). To be given a platform in a breakaway session, a space usually reserved for industry veterans with decades of experience, was a surreal and humbling moment for us as students. We presented our research on Climate Change-induced risks and the resilience of South African cities, a topic we are deeply passionate about. Standing alongside some of the biggest names in the industry didn’t just validate our hard work; it inspired me to dig deeper. It remains one of my proudest achievements to date.

2025 CFA Research Challenge

Another standout moment of my final undergraduate year was being selected to represent Wits in the 2025 CFA Institute Research Challenge. I served as a team member in a group of five, collaborating alongside Honours-level students while I was still in my third year. The experience was an incredibly steep learning curve that pushed me well beyond the standard curriculum. Working so closely with senior students on rigorous investment analysis didn’t just sharpen my valuation skills, it taught me the value of diverse academic perspectives in solving complex financial problems.

IRMSA Risk Management Challenge Winners 2025

IRMSA Risk Management Challenge

After returning from the Spencer-RIMS Student Risk Management Challenge and the African Insurance Exchange, my team (“The Risk Takers”) had a unique opportunity to pay our experience forward. We were approached by “Risk Raiders,” the team selected to represent Wits at the upcoming IRMSA Risk Management Challenge, to assist with their preparations. Drawing on the fresh insights we gained on the international stage, we provided informal mentorship on research strategy, reporting structures, and high-impact presentation techniques. It was incredibly rewarding to see them apply these refinements and secure First Place in the challenge. Playing a supporting role in their victory was a highlight of my year.
