2025 RIMS Student Risk Management Challenge

Christian du Preez - Insurance and Risk Management

It was with great pride that I served as the team leader of team Risk Takers, which represented the University of the Witwatersrand at the 2025 RIMS Student Risk Management Challenge. This prestigious global competition  brought together 61 universities from 19 countries.

After rigorous evaluation, our team secured a place among the Top 8 finalists, an achievement that reflects our dedication and analytical rigor. The final phase of the competition took place in Chicago, USA, in May 2025, where we presented our research and recommendations before a panel of industry experts.

"You did an amazing job presenting. If you represent the future of our industry… that future is bright."

Financial Services Enthusiast

To say that I am merely interested in financial services would be a gross understatement. I have an incessant and overwhelming desire to further my understanding and application of financial, insurance, and risk management practices beyond a lecture hall.

My entrepreneurial background is the foundation of this desire. In 2019, I co-founded my first company, The Prego Boyz (Pty) Ltd, a food truck with a focus on unconventional Portuguese prego rolls. In 2020, I identified an opportunity in website development and SEO, which led to the creation of my second business, SuperbSite. Since then, I have grown SuperbSite from serving micro-businesses to working with large enterprises. Notably,  I have worked on projects for the 2024 DStv Delicious Festival (South Africa’s largest annual food and music festival), Qaanitah Hunter (political journalist), That Food Guy Group (creative agency and producers of Klik Klub on Disney Channel South Africa), TruLab (large ecommerce store), Vector Dynamics Group (an SBV created to bid for, host, and manage the South African Formula 1 Grand Prix at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit from 2027), and many more.

In 2023, inspired by my university peers, I co-founded a third venture, Vintage Vogue, an online thrift store. Although this business was not as successful as my previous ones, and we dissolved the partnership in early 2024, the experience was invaluable. Vintage Vogue taught me as many important lessons about entrepreneurship as The Prego Boyz and SuperbSite.

My interest in Finance, Insurance, and Risk Management is not newfound. Through the “gaming error” of lockdown 2020, I was selling in-game insurance and financial services to my friends online. I went to the extent of creating advertisements for these services. Beyond virtual realms, I had to put basic risk management principles into practice to ensure the survival of my businesses through COVID-19. As a result, both The Prego Boyz and SuperbSite are active to this day.

Going the extra mile

...and then a few miles more

Excellence is not an accident. It is the result of deliberate effort, consistency, and an unwavering commitment to surpassing expectations. This principle defines my approach to every endeavor, whether professional, academic, or even personal projects.

Most people would just shoot a quick group text to set up a poker night, but not me. I went all out, spending hours putting together a full-on movie-style trailer for the game. Think dramatic music, fancy edits, inside jokes turned into “coming soon” teasers. Some might call it overkill, but why settle for boring when you can turn a simple invite into something unforgettable?

This same dedication has opened unexpected doors. My reputation for meticulous work caught the attention of Radio Islam International, where I was invited to speak live about the value of detail-oriented execution in personal and professional projects. The segment highlighted how consistent effort, even in seemingly small tasks, builds credibility and leads to broader opportunities.

Whether in risk management competitions, multimedia projects, or public engagements, my philosophy remains:

The extra mile is not a detour, it’s the only route worth taking.
